Anti SPAM FAQ If you have arrived at this page by following a link on a rejected email, the chances are that you are an innocent bystander in our war on spam (junk email). If you are an SEER customer attempting to email us, please accept our apologies for the inconvenience. You may contact us by calling us at our toll-free number or by sending us an email. Your feedback will help us tune our spam blocking more effectively. Otherwise, please read all of this page carefully before deciding what to do next. Spam has become far more than merely an annoyance - it is now a major distraction for our users and has the potential to waste a lot of their time. 40-50% of all inbound Internet email to SEER is now rejected at source by our anti-spam policy (of which 10-15% is by our use of block lists and the rest for other reasons such as forged sender or recipient address). There are very few complaints about legitimate business email being blocked in this way; indeed, spam can and does still get through though at a greatly reduced rate. Furthermore a high proportion of rejected messages contain material the possession of which may be illegal and the viewing of which by an unwitting recipient may be a very unpleasant, even traumatizing experience. Spam is now a pervasive issue for Internet users and, as an Internet user yourself, you most probably have direct experience of it. A brief reading of the FAQ below will help you understand what happened to your email and what steps you can take to correct the problem. 1. I was directed to this page by a bounced email. Why? Your email was rejected because we have chosen not to trust Internet mail hosts that are listed by certain block lists. The host which attempted to deliver your mail is listed in one of these block lists - the rejection message we sent you will tell you which one. For example:
Make a note of which list caused your mail to be blocked and read the rest of this FAQ. SEER blocked your mail. Block list suppliers do not (indeed, can not) cause mail to be blocked. They simply list the addresses of certain Internet mail hosts along with the reason for including them in their lists. Users of these lists then decide how to react when encountering email coming from a listed host. SEER has chosen not to accept email from hosts listed in the block lists we use. 3. Why do you do that? SEER's email system is an important business communications medium. Without block lists, it turns into this:
This is only a small sample of genuine, recent spam. Many more examples cannot be displayed here for reasons of taste and decency. At SEER, our overriding concern is to provide our customers with the best service and information. Spam gets in the way of this mission and we have had to take drastic steps to reduce its impact. 4. But my email to you was not spam! We make no judgments on the content of email rejected by our use of block lists - we never saw your message. We are only able to make our judgment based on where that message came from - in this case a host computer we have chosen not to trust as it is a known spam source or not properly secured against abuse by anonymous third parties. 5. I'm not an IT professional, I'm just a user. Who will help me with this? Please contact your IT, computer systems or email administrator. It will help him/her if you forward the entire rejection message you received from us including the link to this page. If you are a user of a service provided by a telephone company or similar provider of services to homes/small businesses, you should be able to address this message to postmaster@isp.com, where isp.com is the name of your service provider. Please do not contact SEER or block list SEER will not be able to service requests such as "please stop using the [insert name of list] block list" as doing so will simply reopen the floodgates for more spam.
